    Jose • Alexander • Xanana Gusmao (Jose Alexandre Xanana Gusmao) was born in East Timor in June 20, 1946 of manatuto. He received the initial, intermediate education to dare, to the capital of Dili to participate in the work, as a surveyor,faculty and the "Timor" sound of journalists. In 1974 Gusmao joined therevolutionary front for an independent East Timor, in 1975 was appointed deputy director of propaganda department. 1978 December East Timor Fretilin leaderslobatto died, he became the leader of the front in fact. Gusmao presided over the1981 March held the first meeting of the revolutionary front for an independent East Timor, and at the meeting was elected commander in chief of front leader and East Timor National Liberation Armed forces.

    Gusmao in 1992 November by the Indonesian army arrested and in the following year was sentenced to life imprisonment, later commuted to a prison term of 20 years. In 1999 February, the Indonesian government under international pressureforced Gusmao to house arrest. In September 7th the same year he was president Habib's pardon, and become the National Council of Timorese resistance,chairman, resigned in August 2000. In 2002 February Gusmao announced in theEast Timor's first presidential election. In April 14th of that year, he won thepresidential election in May 20th, was inaugurated as the first president of East Timor after independence. In 2007 August, President Orta appointed Gusmao as prime minister, in August 8th, Gusmao was sworn in.

    Gusmao is devoted to the study of resistance strategy in prison, learning English,Indonesian and law at the same time, and continued painting and poetry. He was awarded the prize of Timor poets, some of his paintings are sold to fund the activities of the organization, resistance, its political papers are compiled the book"East Timor: a nation, a country". Gusmao became a "symbol of freedom" in East Timor, the international media called him "the Mandela of timor".

    Gusmao's wife is Australian, have a son and a daughter.
